Miami Jewish Health Systems Appoints Sharon Pontious and Marc Lippman To Its Board of Directors

Dr. Sharon Pontious and Dr. Marc Lippman join leadership of South Florida’s largest healthcare organization.

MIAMI, FL — Miami Jewish Health Systems (MJHS), one of the nation’s leading providers of comprehensive healthcare for people of all ages, announces the addition of two new members to its board of directors: Florida International University interim dean and professor Sharon Pontious, Ph.D., and medical doctor Marc Lippman, M.D. The appointments reflect MJHS’ commitment to delivering the highest quality of healthcare by bringing in influential members of the healthcare community to apply their clinical expertise to the leadership of the organization.

Dr. Pontious and Dr. Lippman join the board as MJHS celebrates its 70th anniversary of service to South Florida, an achievement that points to the organization’s ability to adapt to shifting dynamics among the region’s diverse population and challenges within the healthcare industry. Today, MJHS’ team of nearly 1,000 employees serve 3,700 people each day on a Miami campus and at facilities across South Florida.

“These two highly-esteemed professionals bring wealth of expertise in medicine, academia, and organizational management, with skills spanning every aspect of the healthcare field,” said Jeffrey Freimark, Chief Executive Officer of Miami Jewish Health Systems. “Drs. Pontious and Lippman both benefit from decades of professional experience that will introduce new insights and perspectives to the Miami Jewish Health Systems organization. Sharon Pontious, Ph.D., is interim dean and professor of Florida International University’s College of Nursing and Health Services. She has held a number of other administrative and academic roles at the College and other academic institutions during a decades-long career highlighted by dozens of presentations, articles, and other publications. In addition, Dr. Pontious has been involved with numerous research studies and is the recipient of several awards honoring her accomplishments as a teacher. She is on the board of directors of the United Home Care and the advisory board for the Haitian-American Nurses Association, and a board member of the South Florida Nursing Consortium. Dr. Pontious received her Doctor of Philosophy in education from New Mexico State University; her Master of Science in nursing from the University of Minnesota; and her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Wisconsin.

Marc Lippman, M.D., currently serves in a range of administrative and academic roles for local educational and clinical institutions. He is a tenured professor of medicine and chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, as well as deputy director of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. A former United States Navy captain, Dr. Lippman has authored or co-authored several hundred books, articles, and research studies on oncology. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and licensed to practice medicine in Michigan, Florida, and Washington D.C. Dr. Lippman received Doctor of Medicine from Yale Medical School and his Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University, where he graduated magna cum laude.
